Unregulated AI agents incur undocumented costs and cause production system failures

According to ZDNET reporting on StackGen's State of Reliability Report analyzing 109,000+ incidents, unregulated or semi-supervised AI agents are causing cost overruns and data destruction in live systems. The report documented at least nine cases in the past year where agents with valid credentials wiped data and deleted databases undetected, and found one agent that ran 4,819 calls over four days costing nearly $4,000 with no budget allocated; median incident resolution times have remained flat since 2023.
