CIO survey finds nearly two-thirds of companies lack oversight of employee AI use

According to Protiviti's 2026 AI Pulse Survey cited by CIO, nearly two-thirds of companies report employees have used AI without proper oversight, and almost half of large enterprises lack full visibility into which AI tools their staff are using. IBM's 2026 Tech Leader Study found 77% of technology leaders say AI adoption is already outpacing their governance capabilities. CIOs report AI spending is distributed across vendor renewals, usage-based pricing, and business unit budgets, making total costs difficult to track.
