3336 open agentic AI roles across 196 companies — agent engineering is 65% of all tracked demand
As of 14 September 2026, the index tracks 3336 open agentic AI roles across196 companies in the United States and Australia & New Zealand, fetched weekly from 244 public careers boards. Counts use a strict title-level classifier; generic data and software roles at AI companies are excluded. For the local cut, see the Australia & NZ snapshot. This is the September 2026 baseline — growth statistics begin with the next weekly snapshot.
Frontier vs traditional employers
The index tracks two cohorts: frontier AI-native companies (the Forbes AI 50 and CB Insights AI 100) and traditional enterprises deploying AI. Comparing how much of each cohort’s AI hiring is specifically agentic shows where the agent shift has reached — and where it is still arriving.
Frontier AI companies
69%
of 2325 AI roles are agentic · 126 companies
Traditional enterprises
59%
of 1011 AI roles are agentic · 70 companies
Early read: the enterprise cohort is a 70-company sample fetched via Workday search, which biases toward agent-titled roles, so treat the enterprise figure as directional. The panel expands weekly as more traditional employers are added.

Where does the data come from?
The index tracks two cohorts: frontier AI-native companies (the Forbes AI 50 and CB Insights AI 100) and a curated panel of Fortune 500 enterprises. Postings are fetched weekly from each company’s public job board — Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Workable, SmartRecruiters, Recruitee or Workday. Each posting is screened on its full job description, not just the title: a role counts as agentic only when it shows a hard signal (a named agent framework, an agent protocol such as MCP, or an explicit multi-agent architecture) or two distinct softer signals such as tool use and agent evals. A generic "agentic AI" mention in company boilerplate is not enough, and every posting records which signals fired. Generic data and software roles are excluded. The dataset is published under CC BY 4.0 at /jobs/data.json.
