According to The Register, OpenAI is addressing a logging implementation flaw in Codex that generates excessive SSD write operations. Developer Rui Fan reported that after 21 days of uptime, the tool wrote 37 TB to disk, extrapolating to approximately 640 TB annually—consuming a full drive's warranted write endurance in less than a year on a 1 TB SSD with 600 TBW rating. The bug has prompted widespread SSD premature failure and warranty exhaustion across enterprise deployments.
